Something Smells
Feb 06 2003 -- 01:05 AM

I'm going to start today in the blog, because I don't know where else to start. At least here I can feel free to just ramble on and on and on, as I"m wont to do. I'm discovering quickly the differences between this site and, well, everything else I've done up to now. This one requires planning and thought. It's not quite enough to just open up the browser and type away. It needs structure to make any sense, and certainly to keep anyone's attention.

Today, for example, lots of things happened, it was a fairly eventful day. But I don't want our main entries to just be, "we did this, then we did that. it was cool." That sucks. Fine for a blog, I guess, but no good for this site. I feel pressure to be clever and funny, usually, or at least interesting if not those. I know how bored I get reading people just listing one event after another after another.

My hope comes mostly from the idea of doing it as often as possible. Try to write something everyday, and hope the flow starts to come. I'm thinking it will, I'm hoping it will anyway. The site will develop its voice at some point, probably not until we're actually out on the road, away from these too familiar surroundings. And these particular surroundings are familiar, but in a strange way. My parents live here, so I know it, but I've never lived in this house, in this neighborhood (such as it is), and I really don't know anyone in Baltimore anymore. So it's basically biding time, spending time with the folks, which is good, except they're working, and waiting for the next thing to happen.

Hopefully, some people out there will wait too. Really, I'm hoping for it to get interesting.

A Nice Green Bush Would Look Great Here

Well, I thought for a minute that this site would be a-political, that maybe I'd leave the ranting for slapnose.com and keep it out of here. But then Nootje went off a bit in his Super Bowl piece and then President Eyes Too Close Together got on the TV and that was it. It's politics now baby, at least until we actually get on the road, at which time I'll probably be distracted by cows and car repairs, and focused mainly on Civil War politics anyway.

Anyway, what honked me off the most about this speech was the environmental crap. I expected him to talk about war, and was actually glad that he at least made an effort to explain why he things we should blow the shit out of Iraq. It made me sick, though, to watch this guy stand up there and with a straight face tell the world that he wants to be a leader in saving the environment. What a crock. This guy has single-handedly detroyed more environmental legislation than anyone else, ever. (Okay, I have no idea if that's true. But I know he's repealed a lot of laws.) His big idea is to let corporations police themselves. The environment won't be saved by a bunch of length lawsuits, we should just leave it up to the companies to take care of it. I'm sure they probably will.

It seems to me that he can easily say these things, that he's proposing all kinds of environmental measures, in front of a world audience and look good, knowing full well that the Republican Congress will never pass any of it. Then he can say, "Well, I asked 'em." Sheesh.

Okay, got a little too angry there. This is supposed to be a fun site and look what happened. And on launch day no less.
